I set out create a geometrically faceted fruit bowl. There was no preconceived form, only the style. After finishing the form I realized that it was the pond at my parent’s house where I grew up. Interesting how the subconscious emerges.
This project was tempting me to take advantage of the quantity of sleeves called for. I wanted to create individual pieces unique in appearance that correlate with each other enough to excite passerbys, anticipating for what is ahead. My concept takes a unique approach to human interaction, more specifically communication. Each individual unit is a representation of a person speaking. Not only a representation but the actual physical voice pattern, recorded and transposed into aluminum. Each one unique in physical appearance and content. Each one speaking. Together, they represent the voice of a city. A lottery will be held, open to any Austin resident. The winners will participate in the project by providing the input for the sleeves. This will be in the form of a quote or a comment. The visual pattern created by their voice is used to create the profile of the sleeve. Each pattern is saved and can be reproduced if necessary due to damage. Because the pattern is created in CAD format it can also be scaled to accommodate different sized sleeves. The sleeves can be taller or wider in order to fulfill structural requirements. The aluminum may also be anodized in any color to fit in with any pre-existing color scheme. These voices will act as barriers, protectors, for support, and to inspire a city.
